Self care series - A good skincare routine

A good skincare regime can help you feel good about yourself; the knowledge that you are looking after your skin and health can give you a real positive boost and can help you feel more confident.

We have been asked by our customers to outline the skincare routine that we would recommend using in conjunction with our new plastic free skincare range. The range includes a gentle, foaming cleanser, an exfoliator and a hydrating face mask.

Learning to know your skin type can be half the battle. Perhaps you have an oily chin area or are prone to breakouts there but have very dry cheeks that always feel tight?

Let’s take a deeper look at the skin on your face so you can learn a little more about how to protect your skin, especially in the colder months.

The structure of the skin

The skin on your face is more delicate and sensitive than the skin on other parts of the body. The outermost layer of the skin is called the epidermis. The main function of the epidermis is protection - from loss of hydration, protection against harmful bacteria and from toxins.

The epidermis is covered in a hydrolipid film (hydro meaning water and lipid meaning oils). It is the water part of this film that is referred to as the ‘acid mantle’.  As the natural pH of skin on the face is around 5.4 to 5.9 it is essential that this acid mantle is not disturbed. Any increase to the pH level can lead to water and lipid loss, leading to dry skin.

Beauty Kubes plastic free cleanser

Many cleansers on the market contain harsh surfactants and have an overall pH of around 6-7. This is too alkaline for the skin and can disturb the natural lipid and water balance. It can also prevent the good bacteria present on your skin (skin flora) from carrying out their role of destroying harmful bacteria – leading to acne, rosacea and other skin problems.

The good news is that Beauty Kubes plastic free skincare range have all been carefully balanced to a pH range of around 5.5

They also contain very mild surfactants and skin boosting, hydrating vitamins, natural oils and plant extracts to ensure optimum skin health. For instance, our cleanser contains Salix alba (Willow bark extract) which contains a component called salicin; a glucoside of salicylic acid (not the same as salicylic acid). While not a true salicylic acid, willow bark extract can be useful in helping to reduce the risk of irritated or inflamed skin as it is full of astringent tannins and salicin which is documented as having anti-inflammatory effects which can be useful in products for irritated skin.

What is our ideal skincare routine?

Beauty Kubes plastic free cleanser

Daily:

Step 1.) Cleanse the skin once or twice a day with a single cleansing Kube. Take 1 Kube and crumble it into the palm of your hand. Add a couple of drops of lukewarm water. As with all of our products, you only need a TINY amount of water to get the best out of them. Make a thick paste by rubbing your palms together, then add a couple more drops of water to create a lather, massage gently onto the face and eye area if removing eye make-up.

Step 2: Rinse with lukewarm water. Never use hot water as this can dehydrate the skin.

Step 3: If you want to use a toner then do so at this stage, you may find your skin feels perfectly cleansed and plumped without it!

Step 4: Use your favourite serum, balm or face oil if you use one. (We have a great product for this stage currently in development!)

Step 5: Finish with a hydrating face cream, applying to the face and neck in sweeping strokes, gently massaging into the skin. Our Hydrating Facial silk is a very hydrating moisturiser, perfect for those who have normal to very dry skin types. Try to apply your serum and or moisturiser to your skin while it is still damp from cleansing, to seal in as much moisture as possible.

Twice weekly (Normal to oily skin):

Exfoliate

If you have normal to oily skin, you can exfoliate with our Kubes twice a week.

Step 1: Take one Kube, crumble in the palm of your hand, adding a couple of drops of water to create a thick paste. Add a couple more drops of water, then gently massage into the face, neck and decolletage area (if desired). There is no need to cleanse the skin prior to exfoliation (unless you need to remove make-up) as the exfoliator contains mild surfactants.

Follow with steps 2 to 5 from above.

Apply a Face Mask

If you have normal to oily skin, you can treat yourself to a Hydrating Face Mask up to twice a week!

Step 1: The face mask can be used after exfoliation for best results. Take one face mask Kube and crumble into a tiny pot. (Our hand-crafted ceramic pots are ideal for this).

Add a few drops of water and mix. Add a few drops more water until you get a thick, smooth consistency. Stir with a spoon or a make-up brush and apply to the face, avoiding the eye area. Applying the mask with a brush gives the best result. Leave on the face for up to 10 minutes.

Follow with steps 2 to 5 from the daily routine above.

Weekly: For those with slightly sensitive skin, just exfoliate once per week followed by a face mask. See instructions above.

We hope you enjoy using our Beauty Kubes skincare products and that they can help you reduce plastic in your bathroom. Let us know if you have any questions or comments.
