Have you tried an oat water hair rinse?
We often get asked about whether it’s necessary to use an apple cider vinegar rinse after using our plastic free Beauty Kubes. The answer to which is no you don’t. Using a vinegar hair rinse too often can actually damage your hair, leaving it dry and can affect the vibrancy of your colour. We will look at vinegar hair rinses in a future post.
However, herbal and natural hair rinses definitely have their place in maintaining beautiful, healthy hair while trying to live a more sustainable, low-waste lifestyle.
This week in our self-care series, we are going to talk about using oat water as a hair rinse. We will discuss the benefits, how to prepare and how to use it. Read on to find out all you need to know.
The benefits of an oat water rinse:
Oats have long been lauded for their health and beauty benefits. We use a special cosmetic form of oats in our conditioning hair mask for sensitive and normal hair types. This special ingredient contains 7% Oat Lipid e, antioxidants, avenanthramides (Powerful natural antioxidants only found in the oat grain, renowned for its skin calming properties) and beta glucan, which all assist with skin and hair health.
Oats have been used for generations to treat dry skin conditions and can help with soothing dry, irritated skin. This is where an oat rinse can help with soothing dry scalp conditions.
Oats can also help to create shine on the hair, leaving it feeling more manageable.
Do I need an oat water rinse?
How to make it:
Here’s where you can really practise some low-waste principles! Next time you make your own oat milk, soak 50g of oats in a jar with 150ml of water. Leave for 3-4 hours.
Strain off the water and retain for your rinse. You can then go ahead and use the oats for making oat milk, eating for your morning porridge or overnight oats.
The drained water is all you need for your hair rinse!
How and when to use:
We recommend using an oat water rinse once a week after shampooing the hair with our Beauty Kubes plastic free shampoo Kubes for normal to dry hair, followed by our conditioning hair mask for normal to dry skin. If you suffer from a dry or sensitive scalp, we recommend using our specially formulated shampoo and conditioner for sensitive scalps.
You can take the oat water with you into the shower to rinse your hair (just keep in mind it will be cold!) or you can put your head over the bath or sink. Just rinse your hair after conditioning, pour the oat water all over your head, make sure you massage it into the scalp and thoroughly coat the hair. You can leave on the hair up to 10 minutes before rinsing with warm water.
The water will only keep for a couple of days in the fridge, so it’s best to make what you need for one rinse.
We would love to know what you think if you give it a go!
